Painting the Isles of Scilly
I feel that my love for these Islands is best expressed in my paintings. I have a great sensitivity to the local landscape and I always try to capture this feeling.
As a landscape artist, I am naturally inspired to paint by what I see in nature.
When I view the landscape I try to isolate the important colours and shapes. Subsequently, I interpret them on canvas in a bolder, more graphic way, often with dramatic use of colour and texturing for maximum effect.
Along with broad, rich application of paint, vivid colour and lively brushwork I often include local ingredients such as sand, granite and shells to add physical texture. This adds a three dimensional feel which aids the creation of depth.
Although I work a lot in mixed media, I mostly work with oils and acrylic as my main mediums. I just love the physical application of the paint and it satisfies my desire for capturing strong colour and light. I paint small panels outside, and re-work larger versions in the studio.
My aim is not so much to appeal to peoples intellect, but touch on peoples emotions and memories.
The end results are paintings that are bold and vibrant. Yet warm, sensitive and harmonious.
